Training needed in the Security Industry
The Security WSQ maps out the skills needed for jobs in the private security industry and the training needed to enter the industry. The system also provides useful career pathways for security officers interested in career mobility and progression in the security industry.
The Security WSQ covers on the Security Manpower Services and the sub-sectors of the security operations (or unarmed security) and the auxiliary police force (or armed security).
Security WSQ replaces the NSRS system for the security industry. Security officers with NSRS certificates that are fully aligned or mapped to the Security WSQ need not repeat the same training modules under Security WSQ (click here) for a list of NSRS modules that are fully aligned to the Security WSQ).
The 3 key features of training under Security WSQ are:
· No minimum educational entry requirements for any of the modules under Security WSQ. However, candidates must meet the required workplace literacy and numeracy level and should possess relevant assumed skills and knowledge;
· Hands-on training of practical skills that workers can apply immediately in their job. Training could also take place on the job;
· Bite-sized training that is modular is nature. Workers can take individual modules to get a Statement of Attainment that counts towards the full qualification. For instance, after completing six WSQ modules at the Certificate level, security officers will be awarded the WSQ Certificate in Security Operations.
The Security WSQ offers nearly 70 modules grouped under four qualifications. For further details, click here.
These training providers (clicked here) have been accredited by WDA to conducted Security WSQ courses, Employability Skills System courses and Service Excellence WSQ courses respectively. You may contact these training providers for specific details of the courses that they will be conducting.
The Security Industry Institute (SII) is a collaboration between WDA and Temasek Polytechnic. The SII will facilitate job seekers and existing security officers in the industry to acquire and upgrade their skills. Besides offering courses under Security WSQ at a subsidised rate, the Security Industry Institute will also house a career centre that will provide career counseling, job screening and placement services for individuals seeking career opportunities in the industry.
The SII will provide programmes for the security operations (unarmed). They provide certificate, advance certificate and Diploma programmes for the security industry. The programmes will commence in September 2007. Courses will be carried out in TP existing premises for the time being.
