Skills Needed in the Retail Industry

The skills needed in the retail industry have been drawn up by the Retail Industry Skills and Training Council comprising industry representatives from seven key retail sub-sectors, industry associations, government economic agencies and key training providers.
 

The council validated and endorsed the competencies needed for a gainful employment in the retail industry.

The seven retail sub-sectors are:

  1. Departmental Store
  2. Fashion and Apparel
  3. Supermarket
  4. Jewellery
  5. Clock and Watch
  6. Petroleum Retail and
  7. Furniture

Competencies in four major retail functions were determined to be essential for the retail industry. These are:

Essential Skills for Retail Industry

Merchandising and Marketing
Support Services
Sales and Customer Service
Store Operations
