Getting the skills for Landscape Industry
For the past few decades, Singapore has been well known as a Garden City. We obtained this distinction not just by chance, but by our consistent commitment to invest in our people to acquire the right skills and knowledge to design, build and maintain our parks, nature reserves, roadside and urban greenery such that they become part of our everyday living and working space.
Recently our city’s commitment to greenery has taken on an even greater challenge with the vision of transforming Singapore into a City in the Garden. More spaces will be transformed and filled with greenery, including spaces within as well as on top of the city skyscrapers. And with the plan to link the parks, our island will eventually be a park in itself, with a city in it. There will not only be more greenery, but also greater accessibility and connectivity for the public to enjoy the green space and facilities.
The road ahead demands not only a greater pool of landscape workforce, but a workforce with the right skills and knowledge for the jobs. To help train the pipeline of a skilled landscape workforce, the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), National Parks Board and the stakeholders in the landscape industry have therefore developed and introduced the Landscape Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ).
Individuals keen to join the industry can take up the relevant skills and modules under the framework to help them move into the sector. For the existing landscape workforce, landscape WSQ provides clear upgrading and progression pathways for them to move up and move across the sub-sectors within the industry.
